The Plains of Id | scheduled for early 2005
editor: Alan Loomis | contributions and suggestions welcome |

In the coastal plains and valleys of greater Los Angeles lie the vast suburban tracts of the cold-war era. Although most of the region's population lives within the "seventy suburbs in search of a city" these locations have been ignored by critical discourse for generations. Yet for many architects, planners, politicians and activists, the future is here - on the "plains of id." In mid 2004 the Forum will examine the emerging practices that engage the difficult and nuanced opportunities of the first-ring suburb.

Forum Issue 6 : A Note on Downtown | winter 2003/04
editors: Vinayak Bharne and Alan Loomis

"A note on downtown ... because that is all downtown Los Angeles deserves," wrote Reyner Banham in his classic study Los Angeles: Architecture of the Four Ecologies. But with the opening of Walt Disney Concert Hall, LA seems to be rediscovering its center. This issue examines the planning and physical context of the Concert Hall, with an interest in locating the rhetoric of a Downtown Renaissance.

Forum Issue 5 : Parks | spring 2003
editors : Alan Loomis and Lize Mogel

With summer upon us, and the outdoors beckoning, the Forum turns its attention to parks and recreational landscapes in Los Angeles and elsewhere. Through a series of essays, projects, and case studies, we outline the social/political/economic/ecological dimensions of open space in the city.

Forum Issue 4 : Consuming the City | winter 2002/03
editor : Alan Loomis

In the context of the Dead Malls competition, the winter edition of the Forum's newsletter examines the landscape and infrastructure of commerce. Covering both new and old shopping malls and districts, it provides a framework for understanding the issues and experience of retail design and property in the city.
