The Los Angeles River watershed, Negligence 2025, ENLARGE

PAST, PRESENT, AND POSSIBILITIES

A future that neglects the urban design potential of the Los Angeles River does not change the present parkland distribution within the Los Angeles River Basin, as illustrated by the above map. But a population increase of 25 percent within this region, as projected by the Southern California Association of Governments, reduces the park-to-person ratio and increases the population density, as the following comparisons show.
(non-mountainous area)

Population Density

Parkland Ratio

Negiligence 2025

7000 people / sq mi

122 sq ft / person

Present

5625 people / sq mi

152 sq ft / person

Population growth for the Los Angeles River basin are derived from projections provided by the Southern California Association of Governments, where data on regional planning efforts and links to member organizations and information sources can be found.

The 30 square mile area surrounding downtown as it would appear if the Los Angeles River is neglected. A 25 percent increase in the region's population, increasing the runoff into the river, would cause it to overflow its banks, flooding the area in light blue.
